A note from Rose...
My name is Rose Antonius. If you know me, you know that I'm extremely independent and have been self-reliant for all of my adult life. I don't even like asking a neighbor to borrow some flour... Well now, I'm here asking for help. I am FINALLY active on the National Kidney transplant list and praying for a miracle!
So now, if I get "The Call", I'm eligible for a donation from a deceased organ donor... BUT, that could take several more years! In exploring every option available to me, being able to receive a donation from a LIVING DONOR is far more beneficial and longer lasting.
The Science-y stuff: A "normal" GFR in a functioning adult is above 90. When it consistently stays below 30, dialysis or a transplant is typically recommended and a plan begins to form with your physician team. Mine has been hovering around 10-15 for some time now. Thankfully, with careful attention paid to diet, exercise and avoiding alcohol and other contaminants... I've avoided starting dialysis up until this point and would REALLY love to NEVER have to do that.
That's where my attempt to crowd source a kidney comes in! Thankfully, we're all born with TWO of them, and the majority of us can live an extremely active, fruitful and unaffected life with JUST ONE. There's two scenarios that are most typical: 1) Someone "matches" and can donate directly to me, or 2) ANYONE can donate into the "registry" and then they would put ME at the top of the list for a donation.
